I visited Hooker Hut in 2022! Hooker Hut is the sweetest little red hut perched above the Hooker Valley—New Zealand’s oldest alpine hut and full of charm. It was originally built in 1910 but had to be relocated in recent years after the land beneath it became unstable. These days it sits on a new site with even better views, still holding onto its historic character. I couldn’t resist painting it, but the view I loved most was from the front of the hut… which sadly doesn’t face Aoraki. So I flipped the scene around a bit—gotta love a bit of artistic license! It’s not 100% realistic, but sometimes the best compositions come from bending the rules just a little.
